Papuan Citizens Await Elections, Situation is Conducive


JAYAPURA, – Registration of candidates for Papua regional heads at the General Elections Commission (KPU) is taking place under safe, conducive conditions, said Papua Police Chief, Paulus Waterpauw on Tuesday (27/9).

According to the Police Chief, the security situation is under control. “As a whole, security and order are under control,” he said.

According to the Chief, there have been minor incidents in Mappi and Intan Jaya, which ultimately had minor impact on the security situation in both areas. According to reports, the Mappi incident was an internal matter between parties, whereas the incident in Sugapa, capital of Intan Jaya regency, was a clash between communities.

The incidents in both areas have since been resolved and a safe situation has returned to normal.
For the 2017 regional election, the Papua Police have requested backup from the Indonesian Police Headquarters.

About 250 police officers from Jakarta will be dispatched to Papua to help assist in securing several potentially volatile locations. The officers will be sent to the 11 regencies/towns holding elections, namely the city of Jayapura , Jayapura regency, Lanny Jaya regency, Nduga, Dogiay, Intan Jaya, Mappi, Yapen Islands, Puncak Jaya, Sarmi, and Tolikara.

“The police will be assisted by the army in securing elections in 11 Papuan regencies/cities,” added the Chief.
